there's no such thing as painter's block

usually i paint from the time i get home from work until it's time for me to go to the bar. but lately- after seeing my work up at our open studio (which i always find incredibly stressful) combined with some personal things, i haven't been able to get anything done at all. instead of heading to the studio at 5, i've found myself enjoying happy hour (and last call). a break is fine, i don't feel like i need to paint all the time, but after two months, i began to worry a bit. so i bought a bunch of new paint and tried to get some things done. these paintings could best be summed up as: breakup paintings, the beginning of some self-portraits to get myself back on track, and some heavy metal portraits of the band total social suicide. i'm most excited about the tss portraits- more to come and some new sexy female figures from the looks of things lying around the studio that are in progress now.

here are the paintings i did show last saturday that i haven't posted yet. thanks to everyone who came, especially bizi gara who were amazing as always and kat who came through with reinforcements just in time- as far as i can tell, we still got through about 8 handles of spirits and a case of wine not counting beers, so well done. we'll do it again soon.

as i'm clearing out the space to hang the show i began to document some of the paintings i have to put into storage. i painted these at the old studio in 2008 so i thought i'd post them to show some of the more raw versions of ideas i'm working through now... to me they feel like the little brothers and sisters of the body of work i'm currently pursuing, not just in their scale (these older works are all much smaller than the new paintings), but also in the early development of the motifs, images and symbols that are becoming more clear to me in the newer, larger works.

when i paint, it usually starts as an abstract painting and then develops over time into something else. i moved into a new studio a few months ago and none of my characters were showing up in the new work. i liked the paintings anyway and let them be what they were. here are a few of my favorites.

welcome to my blog. when it came time to renew the lease on my website, i opted out in favor of this format. it seemed like such a hassle to update the old one and also felt kind of limited. this way i can put up new work without having to worry about how it fits in with the rest. i want this to be more like a sketchbook where i can post whatever i think is interesting, be it photos, video, street art or some of my new paintings. hopefully this will be something that you will want to look at from time to time and not just a way for people i meet in the art world to check out my work. if anything, i want it to be a continuation of the work, maybe more like a look into the artist's process.
